Granit Xhaka made a £35 million transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach to the club in May 2016. His seven years in north London have been challenging thus far. By the end of the 2022/23 Premier League season, Xhaka will have made 296 appearances. He has scored 21 goals and assisted 29 others.
The defender has extended his contract through 2028 with the German club, ending his seven-year residency in north London.
Arsenal had one year remaining on Xhaka’s contract, and the club believes it would be an excellent business to sell him for such a premium price when he turns 31 in September.
Last season, Xhaka was a crucial contributor to Arsenal. He was a member of the leadership structures. He scored nine goals in all competitions last season, making it one of his best.
In his seven years with Arsenal, the 30-year-old experienced numerous ups and downs, but 2019 was the most notable.
At Emirates Stadium, Xhaka was jeered by the spectators, eliciting an angry response from him. At the time, club manager Unai Emery divested him of his captaincy title, and the only reason he remained was Arteta’s request.
However, Granit Xhaka has considerably improved at Emirates Stadium, especially under the tutelage of Mikel Arteta. After the incident, he endured several difficult seasons in the advanced middle position, but this year he has excelled.
Given that the Gunners intend to invest extensively in their midfield, the decision to release Xhaka seems peculiar.
Arteta said, “We’re saying goodbye to a great player and a person we all loved. It’s been an amazing ride with him, and he’s done everything he could for this club.” Granit’s influence on his colleagues and clubmates is indicative of his popularity.”
A heartfelt message was used to inform the athlete of his departure, and a 90-second video was created to commemorate his seven years with the club. “Granit has long been an integral part of our club,” said Edu, the sports director.
“Over the years, he has demonstrated a great deal of loyalty and quality, and he has been an integral part of our growth and success. He will always have our gratitude and respect. We wish Granit future prosperity.” he concluded.
